Organ donation saves lives and occurs at death in hospitals—one donor can save up to 8 lives through organ donation and heal over 75 people through tissue donation. Whole body donation to medical schools or research occurs after death and typically includes free transportation and cremation. You can register for both organ donation and whole body donation, though organ donation takes priority if viable. Most programs return cremated remains to families within 1-3 years.
