Legal Requirements for Sea Burial
For cremated remains, scattering must be at least 3 nautical miles from shore and you should notify the EPA within 30 days with coordinates. Full-body burial requires an EPA permit and must be conducted at least 3 nautical miles offshore in waters at least 600 feet deep. Only biodegradable materials are permitted.
