Documentation Checklist

Essential documents you need, where to store them, and who should have access for complete end-of-life preparation.

About Documentation Planning

Proper documentation is the foundation of effective estate planning. When organized correctly, your documents ensure your wishes are honored, reduce family confusion, and expedite legal processes during difficult times.

Essential Documents:

  • Will or Trust - Primary estate distribution document
  • Financial POA - Authority for financial decisions if incapacitated
  • Healthcare POA - Medical decision-making authority
  • Living Will - End-of-life care preferences
  • Beneficiary Forms - Insurance, retirement, bank accounts
  • Property Deeds - Real estate ownership records
  • Digital Assets List - Accounts, passwords, instructions

Storage & Access: Keep originals in a fireproof safe or with your attorney. Give copies to your executor, POA agents, and trusted family. Never put your will in a safe deposit box—it may be inaccessible when needed. Review and update every 3–5 years or after major life events.

💡 Create a master document list with locations and access instructions. Share it with your executor and keep it updated.
